La Esmeralda Tasting Notes
A perfect Geisha. Floral, stone fruit, citrus, molasses, fudge, elegant, excellent.
La Esmeralda Story
Hacienda La Esmeralda is currently the most famous coffee farm in the world due to their re-discovery of the infamous Geisha varietal in 1996. In wine terms, they would be the number one winery of the Premier Cru, or the top wineries in Bordeaux.
Our lot of Esmeralda Special Grand Reserve is even more special and unique then the name suggests. Purchased directly (non-auction), we were able to personally select the second picking from Esmeralda’s Bosque lot before it even made it to Esmeralda’s famed international auction. The Bosque lot in general is planted with 100% Geisha that is now 8 years old at 1650-1700 MASL and is also a subdivision/unique micro-climate of the Jaramillo region, where the original Geisha plants were found in 1996.
Picking two was harvested in January 2014 and was a standout of perfectly ripe cherries that express the Geisha varietal flavor in a way that we have never tasted in our coffee careers. This makes it, what we believe, to be the most prestigious coffee Temple has offered to date.
